maybelline vivid matte liquid review

With Summer finally making an appearance in the UK and the temperature going a little tropical, I've been feeling a little more colourful and looking for some brighter lip shades to add a holiday feel to my outfits. I'm really into the liquid lipstick craze at the moment, it took me awhile to get interested but after trying the Bourjois Velvet Matte lipsticks, I've really been craving more! The addition of an applicator brush means neater and more precise application and generally (depending on brand) they tend to last a little longer than regular lipsticks. Luckily I had a birthday recently (Happy Birthday to me!) and received a Boots gift card to spend on a little something for myself - which is makeup, obviously! So with gift card in hand I headed into Boots to do a little browse and find some gorgeous summer shades to get me feeling seasonal.

Vivid Matte Liquid from Maybelline comes in 10 different shades ranging from a blush nude to dark plum and market at around £6.99 for 8ml. They are Maybelline's contribution to the ever growing trend for liquid based lip products that dry out to a matte smudgeproof colour with none of the sticky hair magnetising quality of a typical gloss. It's a good capsule range of colours, as there are colours to suit every preference whether you like your lipstick neutral or loud and the lack of extensive choice makes decision making easier! Nobody wants to be stood in Boots for an hour looking at one makeup counter, that's what MAC is for!

As I said above, I was looking for something that was brighter than my usual lip purchases that really brought that sense of summer to my usually monochromatic wardrobe. Not to mention, colour pops are so on trend at the moment! I was drawn to Orange Shot instantly as I love red tone lipsticks, but aside from Russian Red I tend to stay away from bright colours and orange is certainly bright! This lipstick has a red base with a hint of orange to create almost a brick red hue which looks rich and glowing against the skin. It's a great tropical cocktail colour, perfect for beachy holidays and accentuating a deep sun kissed tan.

My second choice was the shade Electric Pink, which pretty much speaks for itself in it's name - it's a shocking neon delight! Irritatingly, my pictures make it look a little bit more purple than neon pink, but you can see from the swatch that it really glows. It is perhaps a more daring colour as it certainly stands out more than Orange shot or your average pink, but daring and in-your-face was sort of the idea here. I wore it most recently with a pale pink sweater and the contrast was beautiful - it toned down the vividness but added an extra punch to my look. Once again it's the sort of shade that pops against tanned skin, so add this to your holiday kit if you're more of a pink hue kinda gal!

Quality wise - the colour of the products are undeniably stunning and you pretty much get what you see in the packet, however longevity and overall quality aren't quite up to scratch. First of all, the products are marketed as 'Vivid Matte' and matte is certainly not what you get unless you're prepared to wait awhile for them to dry and that's not even guaranteed. I found Electric Pink to be more along the lines of a matte lipstick and this is mostly down to the fact that you don't need a lot of product for the colour to show, so drying time isn't as long. However with Orange Shot, I had to add a few more coats to get a richer colour and it just would not dry! I'm still happy to wear it as I love the finished look, I just feel that it is more of a gloss than a lipstick. The other issue I have found is that, unlike other brands on the market, Vivid Matte Liquid really suffers when it comes to wear and tear. Eating and drinking causes patchiness and will require regular top ups of product, so I would highly recommend a layer of lipcote to help seal it or possibly using a straw to minimise product loss!

Issues aside, I think it's a good addition from the Maybelline team, but it could just have been done a little bit better. There are also some positive attributes to what could been seen as flaws in the product, for example the lack of matteness means that it does not dry out your lips like some liquid lipsticks can and it glides on easily meaning application is quick and simple. It's also easy to wipe off any excess without leaving a mark to make sure you get accurate and neat coverage. I certainly still believe they are great complimentary shades to any holiday outfit and I've been enjoying wearing mine and making the most of basking in the beautiful weather before it goes away!
